OVERVIEW
The Initial Training Programme allows the delegate to demonstrate basic Banksman and Slinger practical skills following instruction and demonstration by the training staff.
The Banksman role is primarily to control lifting activities and relay instructions to the crane operator during lifting operations. The Slinger role is to prepare and sling loads for lifting, and the control and release of the loads at their destination.
STRUCTURE
The course is a mix of theory and practical training and delegates are evaluated by means of an examination and practical assessment.
The Knowledge assessment comprises a written test of which the pass mark is 80%
The practical assessment criteria (45 Learning Outcomes) is laid out in the approved standard and will be carried out in a realistic working environment.

TARGET AUDIENCE
The OPITO approved Banksman and Slinger Stage 1 Initial Training Standard specifies the initial training programme for personnel wishing to become competent in the Banksman and slinger role in the oil and gas industry.
CERTIFICATION
An OPITO approved certificate will be issued on successful completion of the course.

The aim and objective of the OPITO Stage 3 competence assessment is to establish that the candidate has the required underpinning knowledge, understanding and practical skills to fulfill the role of Banksman & Slinger safely and effectively.
STRUCTURE
The course is a mix of theory and practical sessions and delegates are evaluated by means of an examination and practical assessment.
The Knowledge assessment comprises a written test of which the pass mark is 80%
The practical assessment criteria is laid out in the approved standard and will be carried out in a realistic working environment.

The Stage 3 assessment comprises of two parts
- Knowledge assessment
- Practical assessment
DURATION

PREREQUISITES for Stage 3 Assessment
A valid Stage 1 OPITO Banksman & Slinging Operations certificate and a fully completed logbook based on the Banksman and Slinger Training Stage 2 requirements .
Or a formal letter from the employer on company letterhead stating that the candidate has met the equivalent of the OPITO Stage 2 lifting experience logbook criteria as stated in Appendix 1 of the standard. This should be in the form of written testimony and should include details of the senior employer representative’s position in the company (Note: full contact details, e.g. telephone number, email etc should be included on the testimony and be signed and dated by the senior employer’s representative).
TARGET AUDIENCE
The Target group for Stage 3 is personnel that wish to become OPITO certified competent Banksmen & Slingers – having previously completed Banksman & Slinger training, and/or possess sufficient and relevant work experience to be eligible for the OPITO Stage 3 assessment.
CERTIFICATION
An OPITO approved Banksman & Slinger Stage 3 certificate of competence will be issued to Candidates who successfully meet the OPITO-approved Stage 3 Assessment Standard.

Candidates for Stage 4 Reassessment require a valid OPITO Approved Stage 3 or Stage 4 Banksman & Slinger Certificate.

The target group for Stage 4 is personnel that wish to renew their OPITO Stage 3 or Stage 4 competent Banksmen & Slinger certificate.
CERTIFICATION
An OPITO approved Banksman & Slinger Stage 4 certificate of competence will be issued to Candidates who successfully meet the OPITO-approved Stage 4 Re-assessment Standard.
